Morikawa, 23 years old and a passion for records

Twenty-three-year-old Collin Morikawa is a wave of newness, in the post-quarantine golf world. Although he has only been a Professional for one year, he made those who saw him in action at the PGA Championship dream. This victory, however, is only the tip of an iceberg of achievements, many of which are made even more extraordinary by their young age.

The first major tournament post-quarantine is his

The PGA Championship has been the most coveted tournament in recent years, at least among golf addicts. It was in fact the first major played after quarantine, bringing our favorites out of the enforced isolation they were forced into.

Although without spectators, the creme of world professionalism battled it out at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco for the 2020 edition of the tournament. Here,Collin Morikawa stood up to far more experienced opponents than him, taking first place in this first Major.

Can we already consider this a historic victory in its own way? Perhaps: Morikawa still won the first weight tournament held after a world-scale event. However, this already extraordinary event also brings with it a record, the first in the series that we will look at in this article.

With only 129points for 36 holes, Collin Morikawa had thelowest score ever in a Major tournament. Before him, the record was in the hands of Tiger Woods. In addition, his 64 points in the last round was his lowest score ever at the PGA Championship.

The most beautiful thing? These are just the last two major accomplishments on the list.

A start that makes you dream

Collin Morikawa won his first major at 23 years and 6 months, which is remarkable in itself. There have only been two younger Professionals who have won the tournament before him-Jack Nicklaus (23 years and 4 months) and Rory McIlroy (just turned 23 in the 2012 edition). This means that only a few months separated him from this record.

The second outstanding achievement: before him, there were only 9 Professionals who won the PGA Championship on their debut. If we stop at the last 50 years, the number drops and becomes only 3 Professional.

Shall we settle for so little? Of course not! In one year as a Professional, Morikawa has passed 22 cuts in a row and has become known as a smiling war machine. Better than him? Only Tiger Woods with 25 cuts passed in a row in his first year as a professional. A parallel that bodes well, just as his Amateur years boded well.

While attending the University of California, Morikawa became the best Amateur in the world and collected victories at major tournaments. So much so that those who follow scholastic golf were not overly surprised when they saw him climb the world’s top golfer rankings not even a year after his debut.

Victories were already in the air.

“I love everything about golf.”

The secret of Collin Morikawa’s success seems to be the same as Tiger Woods’: an obsessive passion for golf. In a single weekend, he was able to play a dozen practice rounds, just to relax and find the right mood. To learn how to move loosely around the field where the tournament would be held and be a little more “comfortable,” so to speak.

The bottom line is that Collin Morikawa loves golf madly. Being able to spend time playing is a dream come true for him, the fulfillment of a dream. The beginning of a great adventure.
